Introduction

It gradually dawned upon me that ‘vayapare vasati laksmi’, the Sanskrit saying I used to hear in India, so often, is so much obvious and enjoyable in the USA. After teaching in colleges for over two decades, I became an entrepreneur and self-employed by default in my early forties. I have been selling insurance, investments and securities, real estate, mortgage and loans for over two decades now and have come into contact with numerous kinds of businesses. I have helped people get established in businesses and enjoyed seeing many of them flourish. I have also
seen them languishing in their efforts, many times due to circumstances beyond their control , and
occasionally because the business owners did not plan properly and/or executed things incorrectly.

We are attempting to provide information for people who wish to start their own businesses, become self-employed, business-owner, and entrepreneur, even grow it further. We are planning to publish a series of articles, in a shorter format in print, but with further details on the web, in this regard. Being a business owner is so very rewarding in the United States, compared to most other places in the world. The realities of glass ceiling in the corporate world, and termination of middle-managers and people in their late forties and early fifties, makes it further attractive to have ones own business to run and make it available to the next generation. We will attempt to describe both kind of businesses where you sell some stuff, like clothes, food and other materials of daily use, as well as those related to service industries like handyman, insurance and real estate sales.
We will try to answer questions Like : How much will it cost me, What kind of down payment
do I need, where do I go for financing, Where can I find listing of businesses available for sale, Whom do I contact for legal formalities to acquire the business, what kind of ROI, return on
investment, can I expect etc. We will encourage readers, potential and existing business owners to
submit further questions and get them answered by experts in the field. We will also try to discuss specific kinds of businesses like : Gas stations and convenience stores, Hotels and motels, Restaurants, Sandwich shops, Grocery stores, Dry cleaners, Liquor stores, popular franchises,
Selling merchandise through shows, Computer software and staffing, Real estate, Insurance, Mortgage, Photography and event coordination, Spiritual and religious needs, health and fitness etc
Plenty of information is available on Google and Wikipedia. But information is not power, while
Knowledge is. Knowledge coupled with experience translates into wisdom, which we wish to convey through this endeavor.
