One of a kind, 21st Century
“Green Wonder”
slated for a fall 2009 launch in Palitana!
By Viren Mayani
Inspired by Acharya Chadanaji, Veerayatan-Palitana will house,
perhaps the World’s first: contemporary, multi-dimensional and
technology infused; environment-sustainability museum. Based on
the foremost Jain credo of “Ahimsa” (non-violence) and void of
any religious, caste, creed, appearance, age or gender
discrimination, “Veerayatan” (a branded non-profit service
organization) has been working diligently for the past 38 years
for the true emancipation of the human kind. This organization
operates successful eye hospitals and involves in assisting any
group of people that has been impacted by natural insurgencies
and tragedies such as the earthquake in Kutch, Gujarat, to name
one. Veerayatan operates several levels of academic institutions
that cover primary, secondary, middle and high schools, besides
college. This year about 65 students have graduated as
Pharmacists from its alma mater. An engineering college with 7
branches is intended to commence accepting students, beginning
year 2010. After its successful completion and subsequent
inauguration, it is also intended that a “Vishwa Vidyalay”
Global University, be built. Today there are about 17 Veerayatan
Centers including the ones in London (UK), Africa, Singapore and
more. Besides serving the primary need of education, these
Centers will also engage in “sadhana” (devotion) and “sewa”
(service). Veerayatan’s next grand project in Palitana is
presented here for your attention, support and involvement.
The Conception: A never before in history; this unique
project to be developed in the holy land of “Ahimsa” will
provide cure-clues for many of the Global ills, if we follow the
tradition of the Thirthankar’s. As Bhagwan Shri Rhushubdev saw
through the Prakurti, humans lived like animals. Bhagwan Shri
Adiguru – Adinathji created the way to a disciplined life. He
showed the growth path to how: one should eat, dress, build a
home, read-write etc. Once life got stabilized, He explained the
amalgamation and need of social, operational and spiritual life.
During weddings and other joyous social celebrations, humans had
begun to enjoy the consumption of animal flesh i.e. meat.
Violence had violated the spiritual lifestyle. Emphasizing that
animals are meant to co-exist with humans and that we should not
hurt them as they share the same emotions humans do; Bhagwan
Shri Parshvanathji denounced the savoring of meat just to
satisfy a few hours of hunger but destroying a life in the
process. Bhagwan Shri Mahavirswami communicated to the masses
that it is only by preserving nature that we will be able to
save our species. It is this theme that is elaborately presented
at Veerayatan-Palitana. Life size, moving and communicating
models will narrate the transformation of human life-form over
the ages and stress the need of co-existence with nature.

The Acquisition: Of the needed 100 acres of land, 48
acres have already been acquired and another 16 acres will be
added shortly. There is an unprecedented willingness by people,
power and process to help this project, based on the traditional
ways of the Thirthankar’s and Jainism’s universal truth of:
compassion, non-violence, lust free love, live & let live,
nurturing nature et all. Within a week 16M Rupees were raised to
commence work. The total project development is tagged at 100M.
The 100 acres will include: boating with a forest experience, a
laser-show theater, sustainability museum, vocational training
centers, micro-climate management, water cascades and much more.
The Execution: This Veerayatan is slated to commence in
September 2009 and take approximately 500 days for construction
completion in 2011. Acharya Chandanaji is committed to staying
in Palitana to oversee this one-of-a-kind development. Besides
displaying the fully interactive Environmental – Sustainability
origins of Jainism, it will train the local men and women in
vocational skills. It is necessary for them to maintain a
respectful life, by earning wages through labor of love. Despite
a few unattended schools, kids of the palanquin bearers will be
taught life-skills. It is Acharyaji’s foremost desire to
mitigate Palitana; an historic sacred sanctorum of more than
1000 years, of the existing vices of smoking, alcoholism,
non-vegetarianism, hunting and other. She wants to replicate the
success experienced at the holy Hindu place of Pandharpur, near
Pune in Maharashtra. This worship destination is able to house
thousands of pilgrims, at any given time; all who come and go
like the natural flow of water. Yet, no one smokes even a small
bidi (cigarette) let alone indulging in other vices. Conversely,
Palitana is challenged to provide even the very basic safe and
hygienic drinking water. Traditional teaching methodologies will
be replaced by modern and engaging teaching structure at the
Centers. It will provide a better understanding of Yoga and
naturopathic clinics and will make Ayurvedic medicines
available. It will awaken all of our senses.
The Requisition: Needless to state that without monetary
support the mission will not meet its planned consecration. More
importantly, what is anticipated of the young Indian-American
Diaspora is the volunteering of their time and talent with
specific reference to technology expertise in: sound systems,
water purification and power generation. The young entrepreneurs
views are needed to enhance this project as a unique model for
global replication in order to multiply its understanding.
