MARTIN LUTHER KING III PAYS STATE VISIT TO INDIA

Martin Luther King III, Along With Rep. John Lewis, Former
Senator Harris Wofford, &Former Ambassador Andrew Young, and
legendary Jazz Musician Herbie Hancock
Martin Luther King III paid an official state visit to India to
commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
and Mrs. Coretta Scott King’s 1959 tour of India. Dr. King also
utilized the present tour of India to further study Gandhi’s
philosophy of non-violence.
Martin Luther King III’s sojourn in India was between February
13, 2009 and February 26, 2009. King, founder of Realizing the
Dream, Inc., made the state visit to retrace his father’s
footsteps in an effort to foster world peace through the
principle of nonviolence.
“I am honored to be making this journey on the 50th anniversary
of my parents’ visit to India. It is my hope that this trip will
serve as a galvanizing force to continue my father’s work to
combat the terrible evils of poverty, racism and militarism,”
said Martin Luther King III.
“By working to foster peace through nonviolence, I hope this
pilgrimage will inspire others to end the dependence on violence
for nominal change, and instead look to the reconciliatory power
of nonviolence to create sustainable progress and diplomacy” he
At the invitation of Martin Luther King III, a congressional
delegation led by Rep. John Lewis accompanied King
journey. Other dignitaries to visit India along with Dr. King
included Atlanta businessmen Mukesh “Mike” Patel, Digvijay
Gaekwad, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s advisor and former
Ambassador Andrew Young; former Senator and advisor to President
Kennedy Harris Wofford and renowned musician Herbie Hancock.
The tour was supported by both the U.S. Department of State and
the Indian government.
As part of the Second Generation Global Peace Initiative, this
tour will be followed by a visit to Kenya in March 2009.
