A brief on Vedanta Center of Atlanta:
Throughout the centuries, India has produced many great saints
and illumined teachers. One of the greatest of these was Swami
Vivekananda. You are aware that Swami Vivekananda was the first
who introduced ancient scriptures of India, Yoga and Vedanta to
America in 1893. He felt the need of Vedanta here in USA.
Vivekananda delivered lectures and classes in the United States
for about three years and founded the first two Vedanta Centers.
The parent organization in India, now called the Ramakrishna
Math and Mission, operates about 150 centers in that and other
countries, ministering to the social, economic, educational and
emergency needs of the public. The well known Sri Ramakrishna
Math & Mission, India is known as Vedanta Society/Center in the
west. They carry the work of Swami Vivekananda in the western
countries.
Swami Vivekananda did not visit Atlanta during his sojourns in
America, but Atlanta is very much fortunate to have an institute
“Vedanta Center of Atlanta” dedicated to the ideals of Trinity
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami
Vivekananda. The work of teaching meditation, philosophy, and
devotion to God was started in the Atlanta area in the late
1970s. The present teacher, Swami Yogeshananda, an American
member of the Ramakrishna Order, has spent many years in
Atlanta.
