It falls on 14th April of the Gregorian calendar. The festival
is celebrated both in West Bengal, India as well as Bangladesh
as well as Bengali communities all across the globe. It is a day
of cultural programmes. The celebration starts right at dawn
with “Probhat Pheri” processions where the men dressed in “Dhuti
Punjabi” (Dhoti Kurta) and women dressed in white Sarees with
red border singing and dancing welcoming the new year. Elaborate
rangolis or alponas are painted in front of the house by
womenfolk with it’s center adorned by an earthen pot filled with
holy water and mango leaves to symbolize a prosperous new year
for the family.
For traders and businessmen it is beginning of the accounting
year and they buy new accounting books called “Halkhata”.
“Misti” (sweets) are offered to their customers luring them to
bring in more business in the New Year.
Every year Pujari of Atlanta celebrates “Poila Boishakh” and
