Jatin Lalit and
Singing Sensations of the future Generations
A Preview
Kavita Chhibber
On the heels of the super play Chaal Baaz Mark Premji has another
show stopper lined up for June 26th. A musical bonanza of
magnificent proportions featuring music composers Jatin-Lalit and a
troupe of outstanding singers who have been making huge waves in the
music industry.
Jatin-Lalit have been scoring some soulful music for Bollywood since
a decade. Coming from a musical family, they began their career by
first singing for R.D Burman in the hit movie Parichay. It was
however as music directors that they hit the big time starting with
Mansoor Khan’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Khiladi, Raju Ban Gaya
Gentleman.
It was however the blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995
that catapulted them to a different league and they haven’t looked
back since. The brothers admit to being inspired by music maestro
R.D. Burman and their music has the same melody and timelessness to
it.
Shreya Ghoshal hit the lime light with her success in Saregama’s
children’s’ final and hasn’t looked back. Shreya’s father an
engineer, working at Mumbai's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, took a
transfer from Kota to Mumbai only to further his daughter's
interests. Shreya, who first performed at four, says her mother is
an amateur classical singer and her father a lover of music. The
judges, at the children’s finals were musical duo Kalyanji-Anandji.
They were so impressed with her that Kalyanji took her under his
wing and trained her for a year-and-half.
Today after singing for many blockbusters like Devdas, Jism, Main
Hoon Na and several awards including the Filmfare awards and the
National award, Shreya is making her second trip to Atlanta.
Parthiv Gohil who has trained under Fariddudin Dagar came and made
such waves at Saregama that he was handed over the Gujarati version
of the show to anchor. His voice has amazing range and sweetness. If
there is anyone who has the potential to be the mega star of the
future it is him. He has sung everything from classical to semi
classical to fusion. Gohil comes from a small town in Gujarat called
Bhavnagar which has now churned out so many artists and musicians
that it is being referred to as Kala Nagri. Gohil hit the limelight
when he won the mega finals of Saregama, singing very difficult
classical numbers originally sung by Ghulam Ali and Amir Khan, the
classical music legends of yesteryears, and so effortlessly that he
floored Pandit Jasraj who was one of the judges. Parthiv hasn’t
looked back since then. The first Pratham concert held in Atlanta in
October last year had featured Parthiv and was a huge success, and
while he wasn’t the featured artist, the long Bandish he performed
to western orchestration in rag Ahir Bhairav, stunned the crowd. His
voice soared to amazing heights and every note was crystal clear - a
very difficult thing to do through such a prolonged period of time.
It got him a spontaneous standing ovation lasting several minutes.
He is always a treat to watch.
Allah Ke Bande, the song from Waisa Bhi Hota Hai that catapulted
singer Kailash Kher to stardom, also established the highs to which
his voice rises. He is called the Nustrat Fateh Ali Khan of India
and says he is very influenced by Sufism in the way he sings. With
big banners like Swades and The Rising with AR Rehman under his
belt, Kailash Kher is a must hear singer.
Mahalaxmi Iyer began with jingles and then progressed to television
serials which she says gave great exposure to her melodious voice.
Today with films like Yaadein, Rahul, Kuch Na Kaho and the much
hyped Amitabh –Abhishek Bachchan starrer Bunty aur Babli under her
belt she is another exciting singer on the horizon.
Kunal Ganjawala first hit the limelight by singing the blockbuster
“O humdum Soniyare from the movie Saathiya but it was the song
‘Bheege Honth’ from Murder, that brought him awards, recognition and
adulation.
Accompanying the stars are singer Ayub Patel who had visited Atlanta
with Shreya Ghoshal and Parthiv Gohil for the Pratham Concert.
Shakeel Ansari who did the honors at that concert as emcee and
reminded one a lot of the comedic star the late I.S. Johar in terms
of wit, mannerisms and facial resemblance will also be there. Ansari
has traveled all over the world emceeing events and regaling
audiences with on the spot hamming, funny quips and limericks.
Prachee Shah completes the star lineup. With so much talent together
onstage, this promises to be an exciting show in the offing.
