On July 22, 2008, nearly seventy guests, apart from the members
of the Georgia Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (GIACC), braved
inclement weather and steered through dense traffic to attend
the informal "Samosas & Chai" networking session, sponsored by
Omedtra, LLC and held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Duluth,
Georgia. The monthly event focused on one of its core activities
– networking. Networking is an art that needs to be cultivated
to become successful in today’s highly competitive world - for
verily, it is not about whom all you know, but rather, who all
know you. The evening started off amidst great excitement and the enthusiastic guests readily began networking. Welcoming the invitees, Narsi Narasimhan, President of GIACC emphasized the growing trade and health care importance between Georgia and India and introduced to the audience Dr. Bharat Shah, one of the members of Omedtra, LLC. Dr. Shah, in a reminiscent mood, briefly spoke about his education and earlier years and how Omedtra came into being. Also present was Dr. Rakesh Thapliyal, who is the founder and CEO of Omedtra, a company that provides support to people in need of medical care overseas. Beginning this April, the Duluth-based company began to send patients to hospitals in India and Thailand – at which destinations they will receive high quality surgical treatment at a fraction of what they cost in the U.S. These are for specific medical interventions like cosmetic dentistry and cosmetic surgery that are not covered by insurance. Speaking on the cost effective ways of taking care of one’s health, Dr. Thapliyal said that we had an option. The cost of treatment for the same procedures will vary depending on the choice of the hospital, and the choice of the country. But the overall cost will be significantly less than the cost in US for the same procedure. Dr. Thapliyal defined medical tourism as affordable healthcare in a foreign country and this practice was in vogue for ages. He listed the questions to be pondered over as - are you uninsured or underinsured? Are you looking for medical procedures not covered by your insurance? Are you on a waiting list to receive your medical treatment? Are you looking for medical procedures not available in your country? Dr. Thapliyal claimed "Our partner hospitals use State-of-Art Equipment which is less invasive and the quality of care is very good." He further stated he was open to discuss the concept of medical tourism and Omedtra's activities and exhorted all members to either call him or send him an email. In closing, Dr. Thapliyal said that he looked forward to building a relationship with the members and guests of GIACC. He thanked Mr. Narasimhan and the other officers of the board for inviting him to address the GIACC. Following Dr. Thapliyal's speech, Mr. Narasimhan introduced to the assembled guests a fascinating personality, Ms. Harriet Hoskyns-Abrahall, who is the Senior Accounts Manager from PBA. She had come to promote the Indian initiatives and spoke on the upcoming landmark six-part series for PBS and the BBC to be aired early 2009. She suggested having a launch party with the GIACC to promote this program. Mr. Narasimhan thanked the organizers and introduced the members of the board to the guests present at the evening. Mr. Narasimhan also thanked the hosts and the event organizer, Dr. Bharat Shah, from the Hilton Garden Inn, for the exceptional arrangements that made the event a wonderful success. |
