Senior Citizens
Celebrates
Diwali At Gujarati Samaj
With Fanfare
Photos & Review: Girish Modi
The senior citizens group of Guajarti Samaj of Atlanta is a
small, but closely-knit group of Guajaratis from all walks of
life. On Sunday November 21, 2010 they celebrated belated Diwali
and New Year festival at the Sardar Patel hall with lots of
fanfare and sumptuous gujarati-style (less spicy and less oily)
home-cooked dinner that was sponsored by Ramesh Pandya and his
family.
The highlight of the celebration was a musical afternoon with
budding singers of Atlanta’s own Navrang musical group run by
Sunny Thakkar. Some seniors like Kokila Mehta, Ajit Dave and
Rajnikant Parikh also participated and entertained their senior
friends with songs and poems. Some senior couples also danced
when Sunny sang the last item of the afternoon.

The whole program rose to the occasion since it was also “Dev
Diwali” and according to many attendees it was more joyous than
the Diwali celebration 2 tights before by the Gujarati Samaj
that included all the members.
As a surprise item a cake was cut to celebrate birthdays of some
seniors.
Thanks to the dedication of volunteers like Ashwin Shah, Rekha
Mehta, Varsha Shah, Ramesh Pandya, Vinod and Aruna Patel, Vipul
Patel, Sunil Patel, Ketan Shah and their family members that
senior citizens had a blast that they will remember for a long
time. |
